Oh, aloe vera!

Just the word conjures up images of summer, sunshine… and sunburns.

But it can do so much more!

It’s the star in most of my Favorite Plant-Based Lubes.

Aloe vera contains the amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and anti-inflammatory properties that are perfect for hair, skin, and scalp. No wonder it’s been popular for centuries. (1)

But not all aloe vera is what it claims to be. And some “aloe” products don’t contain aloe vera at all. (3)

But I’m jumping ahead. Let’s back up.

All About Aloe

An Ancient History

Aloe vera, or Aloe barbadensis miller, is a cactus-like plant that prefers hot, dry climates. (7)

Etymology:

Arabic: aloeh, meaning “shining bitter substance”

Latin: vera, meaning “true”

(1)

Egyptians called aloe vera the “plant of immortality”. Both Nefertiti and Cleopatra used aloe vera in their beauty routines. (1)

Medical references are found in the Egyptian Papyrus Ebers, dating around 1550 BCE, and in the Greek Herbal of Dioscorides circa 70 CE. These documents, while centuries apart, both highlight aloe and its healing capabilities. (16)

Traditional medicine in some countries use aloe vera for constipation, fungal diseases, colic, and infections. (16)

A Relevant Present

Aloe vera’s popularity since ancient times isn’t a surprise. Just check out its nutrient profile:

It contains 75 potentially active properties like:

  • 20 of the 22 Amino acids, the building blocks of hair protein.
  • 8 different enzymes
  • Fatty acids
  • Vitamins A, C, E, B12, Zinc, Choline, and Magnesium.

(1, 2)

With of a nutrient profile like that it no wonder aloe vera has:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Antibacterial and antifungal effects.
  • Astringent capability to tighten pores.
  • Collagen synthesis properties.
  • Moisturizing effects.
  • Wound healing and scar minimizing capabilities.

(1, 25)

What really makes aloe vera stand out from other lotions or oils? Its ability to permeate the skin.

Many products sit on the skin’s surface and take time to absorb. Aloe vera is 98.5-99.5% water and can efficiently permeate the skin and hair follicles on contact. (2)

It can aid skin integrity, flexibility, and moisture retention. (2,10)

That means all those amino acids and other goodies are able to penetrate the body, not just sit on top of it. Hello, hydration and nutrients!

It can penetrate the skin’s surface so effectively that pharmaceuticals use aloe vera as a transdermal drug delivery enhancement. (2, 9)

Aloe vera might help conditions like:

  • Acne
  • Anal fissures
  • Burn wounds
  • Cracked nipples
  • Genital herpes
  • Pressure ulcers and bedsores
  • Post surgery wound healing including episiotomy and cesarean section
  • Psoriasis
  • Reducing scarring during healing process
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Skin graft recovery
  • Vaginal atrophy
  • Wrinkles

(1, 10, 12, 25)

A systematic review of 23 clinical trials concluded that aloe vera is “more effective and less costly compared to the currently available alternative treatments” (10).

Cheaper and more effective? I’m in.

Aloe: Standards & Scams

Aloe vera has a lot going for it. And there’s so many way to use it!

But here’s the thing. Not all “aloe” is actually aloe vera.

Does Your “Aloe” Actually Contain Aloe Vera?

When it comes to aloe vera, reading labels is crucial.

While counterfeits are always a concern of mine (so much so I made a Guide to Spotting Counterfeits), aloe vera comes with extra concerns.

Greenwashing Alert: Aloe vera, specifically aloe barbadensis leaf juice, was not found as a main ingredient (or sometimes as an ingredient at all) in most store-bought aloe gels tested, according to a 2016 article by Bloomberg Business News. (3)

Packaging in the samples listed aloe vera, but testing failed to find evidence of aloe. Three chemical markers for aloe vera: acemannan, malic acid, and glucose were absent. Instead, maltodextrin, a powder-like sugar that resembles aloe vera powder, was found instead. (3, 5)

As a result, accusations of false advertising by consumers mounted into several class action lawsuits (5). As of 2020, one consumer class action lawsuit was dismissed. (6)

I don’t know about you, but when I buy aloe vera gel, I want there to actually be aloe vera in the bottle.

Sure, some allegations have yet to settle in the courts, but I’m still skeptical about “aloe” products. Especially ones with non-aloe vera related components like artificial coloring or menthol cooling ingredents.

Aloe vera doesn’t need a bunch of other ingredients, we’ve already learned aloe vera can stand alone. I don’t want the bottles of neon blue ‘sunburn aloe gel’ with dozens of added ingredients. I want the real deal, and nothing else.

So, what aloe vera do I like? First, let’s see the test they had to pass to even be considered by How i Healthy.

Aloe Vera Standards

International Aloe Science Council Certification Logo.

When it comes to aloe vera, look to The International Aloe Science Council (IASC) certification mark.

The IASC is a nonprofit trade organization that audits aloe vera products and set standards of cultivation, and production. Aloe vera growers, processors, and manufacturers can apply for certification. The IASC mark on a product means the aloe vera content is not only accurate, but meets quality, quantity, and purity standards. (19)

USDA Organic Certification Logo.

Another excellent mark? USDA Certified Organic.

Products with this mark actually contain not only real aloe vera, but also organic aloe vera.

How i Healthy Standard

Not only does aloe vera need to be actually aloe vera, it needs to meet the How i Healthy standard as closely as possible.

Here’s a quick recap:

Green lotus bud.

The How i Healthy Standard

Our favorite products/brands meet as many of these conditions as possible.

Healthy body, healthy planet, & healthy sex means:

Aloe Vera: Skin to Sex

Aloe Vera is effective and versatile.

Here’s some ways to use this powerhouse!

1. Hair & Scalp

Even the ancient Greeks knew it worked wonders in hair! (16)

Because aloe vera is mostly water it can penetrate the hair shaft. This delivers moisture to the inner structure instead of coating it.

Plus, its gel-like film locks those goodies in. That means all that moisture, hydration, amino acids, keratin building blocks, and vitamins penetrate the hair then locks in without crunchiness.

Don’t want to leave it in? That’s okay! It also works wonders as a shampoo or pre-poo!

And aloe on the scalp feels wonderful.

If I’m itchy, instead of scratching, I just drip a few drops of aloe vera on my roots. It slips right past the hair and sinks into my scalp. It reduced my flaky scalp, giving it loads of yummy moisture, without ever looking greasy.

2. Skin

Aloe vera permeates the skin, just as it does the hair shaft. So, the nutrients of aloe vera absorb well. (1, 2, 3)

The nutrients aloe vera delivers helps collagen synthesis, and moisture retention. Moisture and firmness mean less dryness skin fragility. That means strong supple skin.  (1, 2, 10)

It’s also soothing on razor burn too.

I use it after shaving and I’ve noticed my legs looked less leathery, feel smoother, and no longer itch.

I get amazing moisturizing from aloe. And it’s light enough that I don’t break out either!

3. Wounds, Burns, & Scars

Aloe works wonders of sunburns, yes. But it’s also great for regular burns, wounds, and scaring too.

Aloe vera links to accelerated wound and burn healing while reducing new scar tissue. (1, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16)

I’ve used it to help prevent scars from surgeries I’ve had.

When I had Mohs surgery to remove some skin cancer from my cheek, I used aloe vera to help with the new scar.

While it’s only anecdotal, I have found it the scar tissue not only less visible, but also more flexible than other scars. I’ve impressed several doctors with that scar.

But my surgeon was also amazing, so he gets some credit too!

4. Lubricant for Vaginal Dryness

Aloe vera has shown to be “as effective as estrogen vaginal cream” for individuals with vaginal atrophy. (25)

Aloe vera is an effective alternative to prescribed estrogen creams to help alleviate symptoms of dryness experienced during menopause or from medication side effects. (25)

5. Lubricant for Sexy Times

Aloe is an excellent base for lube.

It is compatible with latex, rubber, plastic, and silicone. So versatile!

There are many lubes out there, and it’s a confusing chemical mess to navigate. That’s why I made a Plant-Based Lube Guide. Featured there are several aloe vera-based lubes that meet high standards.

My Favorite Aloe Vera

With those standards and uses in mind, here’s my favorite aloe vera products & why.

Badger®

Badger aloe vera tube

  • 50% post-consumer recycled tube.

Why It’s Awesome:

  • USA-made, IASC certified, Fair Trade certified aloe vera gel. Boom.
  • Unscented, and fast absorbing. It can leave a slight residue, so I apply at night.
  • It’s simple, effective, and comes from an awesome company.
  • Excellent for sunburns!
Company Kudos
  • Badger® is awesome. Since 1995, this New Hampshire based family-owned, family-run, Certified B Corp® has taken social and environmental stewardship seriously.
  • Badger®’s products are made in the USA and are Leaping Bunny Certified. Most products are also certified organic and/or Fair Trade. No wonder many of my Favorite Products are made by them.
  • Donates 10% of before tax profits to educational and community nonprofits.
  • Their family friendly policies include primary & secondary care parental leave, extended parental leave, childcare reimbursements, and partially subsidized on-sight daycare.
  • There’s even a “take your babies to work” policy where infants up to 6 months can join their parent in the office.

Eco certification marks on product.
Just look at all those marks! Swoon.

Earth Harbor

Product Kudos

Origin: Utah, USA.

End of Life: Recyclable glass bottle and jar.  Plastic tops depend on community recycling standards. OR you can opt for refills directly from Earth Harbor and reuse the plastic tops! The refills are capped with easy-to-recycle aluminum tops that you swap out for your old plastic tops.

Ingredients/Packaging:

  • The Earth Harbor Collection: Each serum is made with science-backed and sustainably-source ocean nutrients & botanicals.
  • All products ship plastic-free. All paper packaging is post-consumer and recycled FSC certified. Glass containers are from recycled glass. Post-consumer plastics include ocean waste plastics too.

Why It’s Awesome:

  • Absolutly amazing! Just see my Earth Harbor Review.
  • Aloe vera penetrates the skin easily. It’s the perfect conduit for getting nutrients to the skin. And Earth Harbor is packed with skin strengthening nutrients. That’s why the Azure Regenerative Neck Cream is so amazing!
  • I absolutely love all things Earth Harbor! It’s sustainably made magic in a recycled and recyclable glass jar. My face feels incredible, and it literally glows! Hands down my favorite natural body care products.
  • No synthetic ingredients/preservatives/fragrances, GMOs, fillers, petroleum, mineral oils, parabens, or phthalates.
  • These aloe vera-based moisturizers are packed with researched-backed, and peer-reviewed ingredients. That means real results, not false hopes.
  • The Siren Silk has skin-strengthening Sea Samphire (or sea fennel). Sea Samphire contains non-synthetic Vitamin A and antioxidants that act like a retinol. Retinol is a type of retinoid. And retinols and retinoids are the most science-backed skin treatments we got. Research shows Sea Samphire has similar results as synthetic retinols. And, unlike many retinols, Sea Samphire does cause side effects like irritation or photosensitizing. As someone prone to skin cancer, I can’t put anything on my face that increases my risk. So non-photosensitizing is awesome.
  • And Sea Samphire is not endangered! It can be sustainably harvested too. Unlike Bakuchi, an endangered plant with similar retinol-like functionality, that is in many other plant-based products.
  • The aloe vera-based Mermaid Milk contains vegan hyaluronic acid that plumps & hydrates skin while turmeric and blue tansy reduce redness. I like to use this on my chest & cheeks where I have red patches due to sun damage (poikiloderma).
  • Aqua Aura is a aloe vera based eye cream that also packed with seaweed collagen, blue tansy oil, Hyaluronic Acid, and antioxidants. That means an eye cream that gives you that “I slept really well last night” eyes.
  • For maximum skin strengthening I use Luna Rain. This milky serum contains aloe vera, 15% AHA + BHA blend, Macro-algae Collagen, and Vitamin C-rich oils. Total powerhouse.
  • Did I mention how awesome these products are?? I’ve had skin cancer, so taking care of my skin is top priority. I’ve got scars to moisturize and skin to protect from more surgeries. Earth Harbor is the only product I trust with my face.
  • Earth Harbor is also at Earth Hero®!

 (36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42)

Company Kudos
  • ALL the certifications! PETA®, Leaping Bunny®, Climate Neutral®, Sustainable Forestry Initiative®, and Think Dirty® certified, as well as members of 1% For The Planet®, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics™, Truth in Labeling™, and Independent Beauty Association®.
  • Ali Perry, Earth Harbor’s founder is a published researcher, certified health scientist, humanitarian engineer, and herbalist who specializes in global environmental health and toxicology. Now she uses her knowable to create sustainable, plant-based, and science-backed beauty products.
  • Backs of product claims with peer reviewed research.
  • Donates $1 to environmental non-profits for every product review on their site.
  • Employs 40 local people at their solar-powered lab in Utah.
  • Hosts local beach cleanups at the Georgia administration office.
  • Sources many non-GMO, organic, and sustainably wildcrafted ingredients from local farmers and herbalists.
  • Seriously, Earth Harbor is setting the standard for sustainability awesomeness.
  • Nearly 100% of packaging is locally-sourced (within 50 miles)
  • Plastic-Free packaging options!
  • Women-owned business

(35)

And you know me.

I don’t like lots of products or stuff. And I thought it all was too much at first.

I mean really, multiple face products?

But it’s so worth it. Each serum targets something specific for my skin. And skin penetrating aloe vera gets those serums where they need to be.

Why more reasons to love it? See the Earth Harbor Review.

The Takeaway Message

Aloe vera is a nutrient powerhouse full of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. (1, 2)

But many products have impressive nutrient profiles too.

What makes aloe vera different?

  • It can permeate the body very well. Being nearly 99.5% water, aloe’s absorption rate is effective.
  • It is so effective, pharmaceuticals use it to enhance transdermal drug delivery. (2, 9)
  • That means the body and hair shaft absorbs those nutrients. They don’t just sit on the surface.
  • It might support collagen synthesis. This means potentially reducing wrinkles, dryness, and skin fragility. (1, 2, 10)
  • It can also help dermatitis, psoriasis, wound care, post-surgery healing, scar prevention, vaginal atrophy, and cracked nipples. (1, 10, 12)
  • It makes for an excellent Plant-Based Lube.

But not all “aloe” products have actual aloe vera in them.  (3, 5, 6)

Plus, there’s all the problems of Counterfeit Products out there.
