Already read The Sustainable Sex Toy Guide and Sex Toy Greenwashing Guide?

Feel overwhelmed by all the options?

Want sustainable & ethical options?

Prefer to shop at a local or from your home country?

Then this guide is for you!

But first! Let’s cover some basics. Because where you shop, and what you buy, matters.

Problems with Sex Toys

Quality Control and “Body-Safe”

Here’s the only dirty thing about sex toys: Archaic laws and standards.

This open doors for unsafe products, misinformation, and illegitimate business enterprises. Especially in the US.

Here’s a few of those laws and standards:

  • The 1973 Texas “Obscene Device Law” made selling sex toys illegal until 2003. They’re still illegal in Alabama (6, 7)
  • It’s still illegal to have more than six dildos in Texas. (6)
  • Vibrators are “therapeutic devices” and need a doctor’s prescription, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Without that prescription (as most vibrators are), vague terms like “novelty” classify them instead. “For Novelty Use Only” has protected manufactures from lawsuits when their products harmed consumers. (1,8)

Plus, even though some laws ban them completely, where sex toys are legal, they still aren’t regulated. That includes Canada and many European countries too. (1, 9, 10)

Then, there’s “body-safe” materials. This phrase has good intentions. But there is no independent third-party certification verifying this claim. Anyone can claim “body-safe”. (1, 2)

“Body-Safe” is the “all natural” of sex toys. “Body-Safe” is not a regulatory agency, nonprofit, registered trademark, or even a company with a website.

And it’s not only vibrators.

Dildos, strap-ons, anal plugs, air pulsation, packing, penis toys, penis rings, ball stretchers, masturbators, and sleeves all lack consumer protections. (1, 8)

So, with no third-party verifications, are we doomed? Yes and no.

I still seek out “body-safe” toys. Because for the moment, I don’t have many other standards to guide me.

But there is hope!

The National Association for the Advancement of Science and Art in Sexuality (NAASAS) proposed a program to test, verify, and certify non-toxic sexual products. (2)

Till that certification is ready, there’s the NAASAS Safe Sexual Products Campaign. Companies can join the campaign pledge to follow safer standards. (2)

And the Coalition Against Toxic Toys (CATT) has a list of manufacturers, distributors, and retailers dedicated to non-toxic toys (3). It’s one of How i Healthy’s Goals to join this coalition!

Okay, so sex toys aren’t well regulated. What else could go wrong?

Phthalates.

Tested sex toys had phthalate (DEHP) concentrations ranging from 0.07 to 70%, according to a study by the Danish Technological Institute. (11)

That’s no good. Phthalates link to:

  • Lower testosterone synthesis
  • Lower sperm count
  • Decreased fertility
  • Birth defects
  • Potentially damage the DNA of sperm.

(12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)

Because of those health risks, some forms of phthalates are banned in children’s toys. (1, 3, 8)

But not sex toys.

Okay, unregulated and not the safest. Anything else?

Yes. How about counterfeit risks?

Counterfeit Sex Toys

Counterfeits are rampant.

This Guide to Spotting Counterfeits details out how to better avoid counterfeit products.

And sex toys are no exception to counterfeits. And it’s only getting worse.

The increase in counterfeit sex toys concerns Peter Phinney, founder of Porn Guardian, an anti-porn piracy organization. Porn Guardian even established a new division to locate fakes and report them. (4)

Manufacturers of products, like Magic Wand®, a heavily counterfeited product, have a dedicated page on their website on how to spot a fake. (5)

Not Green: Plastic or Bioplastic

Most sex toys aren’t sustainable. Although they pretend to be.

First, many sex toys are plastic.

Some plastics are better quality, like ABS plastic. But in the end, even ABS toys, are plastic. Petroleum-based and non-biodegradable. (18, 19, 20)

Plastic formation requires crude oil or natural gas. This releases greenhouse gas emissions and VOCs into the environment. Thermal processing and 3D printing of plastics, including ABS, further releases VOCs and ultrafine particles. (21, 22, 23, 24)

Then there’s silicone.

A blend of Silica/silicon dioxide (SiO2) heated and combined with fossil fuel-derived hydrocarbons. This reaction creates silicone, a flexible and plastic-like material perfect for sex toys. (46)

While it uses less fossil fuels than plastic, silicone still uses some. And some folks might not want that either.

“Compostable bioplastic” sex toys.
The bane of my existence.

It’s Sex Toy Greenwashing at its finest.

Because unless you’re one of the few folks who lives near the specialized facilities bioplastic needs to be processed correctly, you’re chucking the bio-plastic vibrator in the garbage. (76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81)

A sex toy manual for a bioplastic toy even states that proper disposal of their “compostable” & “recyclable” toy is though “household waste”. (81)

Not Ethical: Forced & Child Labor

Now, the cherry on top of this disaster sundae.

Many sex toys are produced in countries lacking fair-labor and worker protections. (73, 74)

Even sex toy brands marketing themselves as “made from recyclable and recycled aluminum!”.

Ya…but it’s made in a country lacking worker & environmental protections.

And there’s mica minerals mined with child-labor. Mica is used to color silicone sex toys. (70, 71, 75)

Very few sex toys have sustainability or ethical certifications for production and business practices, like a B-Corp® Certification or Green America Business® Certification.

But there are some sex shops and sex toy brands with more positive impacts than others. And even a few with third-party certifications.

My Favorite Sex Toys

Sex toy greenwashing citrus fruits cut in half.

How to navigate all the sex toy counterfeit/toxic/unregulated mess?

Shop for ethically made toys through a reputable sex-positive store. Or from the manufacturer directly.

Sex-positive shops do the research and vetting work. Their curated inventory saves time, so you can get back to enjoying your toys.

There’s more sex-positive & inclusive shops opening up around the world. Maybe even just around the corner from you! Yay, local shopping!

Shopping local means ~ 2/3 of every dollar spent stays in local communities. Shopping local has ~7x more positive impact on communities than online third-party shopping. (25, 27)

If you don’t have a local shop, that’s okay! There are other ways a non-local sex shop or manufacturer can empower communities.

How i Healthy is all about healthy body, healthy planet, & healthy sex.

Here’s how:

Vibrator Nation: How Feminist Sex-Toy Stores Changed the Business of Pleasure

By Lynn Comella, Ph.D.

This book is a perfect example of what I want in a history text.

A laser-focused topic, in this case, USA-based sex toy shops, and how they shaped and were shaped by society, politics, and stigma. The history of sex shops is an excellent case study on the dynamic relationship of politics, feminism, stigma, sex education, economics, sexuality, oppression, expression, entrepreneurship, and activism. This book does it all. And with engaging prose. Swoon.
